Swim Levels

The Illinois Valley YMCA Dolphins offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the Illinois Valley YMCA Dolphins to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

The IV Dolphins welcome everyone that would like to give competitive swimming a try during their annual "Rookie Week", held the first week of the season.  This is an opportunity to experience the program without financial obligation.  It is important to note that the team is not a "learn to swim" type program.  We generally require that all new swimmers are able to complete a 25 yard swim (one pool length) in order to participate, but the most important factor is the swimmer being comfortable in an aquatic environment.

All new swimmers start in the Novice group, and, as their abilities progress, will be moved to the Advanced group.  Decisions regarding movement from one practice group to another will be made by the Dolphin coaching staff.

Elite swimmer’s practices last two hours on Monday through Friday.  Because of this additional practice time, this requires an much larger committment on the part of the athlete.  Decisions based on participation in the Elite group will be made by the coaching staff, based on each athlete’s attitude, work ethic, and ability level.

Practice times can be found on the drop down menu on this tab.
